Every day, women absorb thousands of images and words telling us what we should look like, who we should be, and how we should act in order to be valued in our society. It is a daily struggle for so many of us to make the right choices for ourselves and our families without the added pressure of what society thinks we should or should not do.
This is especially true for pregnancy and pregnancy decisions. The so-called “right to life” movement and other conservative organizations, with their well-funded and repeated media campaigns, have been successful in trying to make us feel shame if we choose to try and prevent pregnancy with birth control, or choose to have an abortion. Their entire campaign is based on the premise that a woman is worth less than a fetus, disregarding a woman’s basic human rights and taking away her power to determine her own future. It’s hard to ignore that these same groups do very little to help women, even pregnant women in need, and much less for children once they are actually born. These groups take no stand or
outright oppose funding for programs that benefit women and children—like Medicaid, Head Start, and school lunch programs.
Here at Northland Family Planning, we have a few thoughts and feelings about this, and we would like to share them with you. Our beliefs are based on many years of listening to women’s stories—the honest, courageous stories women tell us of their unselfish decisions to bring children into the world, or not.
We have learned that women make difficult decisions every day in order to live responsibly and care for themselves, their families, their children and their future children.
We know that when a woman decides to have an abortion, she is making a thoughtful, considered and loving decision, trying hard to be a responsible person.
We have learned, from hearing your stories and living our own, that you are the best person in your position to make such an important decision, and you deserve to be respected and supported throughout the decision making process, and after—regardless of your decision—continuing the pregnancy, adoption or abortion.
Sometimes, it can be hard to remember how important you are, how valued you are, and especially how good you are. Who can blame you? With so many mixed messages, even the most confident woman can doubt herself and the choices she makes.
