We have invested in the best anesthesia equipment, hired a team of specially trained, licensed and certified anesthesia care specialists and developed information, policies and protocols that adhere to the strict national AANA standards for safe office-based anesthesia.

Oral valium or lesser injections of pain medication
that you may hear about at other clinics
are not really an Anesthesia Program.

We have specially designed surgical suites and recovery areas with aromatherapy and relaxation accessories. We practice a unique, more holistic approach toward managing pain. By combining stress reducing, therapeutic relaxation techniques in a warm soothing atmosphere, we treat the whole body - not just the areas affected by the surgery. Soft lighting and relaxing music fill each treatment room, while aromatherapy and a warm heating pad help you relax. This treatment, combined with the care of our professional staff encourages a deeper state of relaxation before, during and after the abortion procedure. This "whole woman" approach sets us apart from other abortion providers.
In addition, we provide each patient, at no additional charge, our Standard Medication Package with Light IV Sedation, and we also offer additional options of extra comfort with Moderate IV Sedation and Deep IV Sedation.

Sedation Medication Options
Here, it's all about you!
We know each woman's definition of pain is unique. That's why we offer several layers of sedation for your particular comfort needs. Additionally, our Physicians consider both your medical and personal factors as they adjust medications for your individual requirements.

Light IV Sedation
Our Standard Medication Plan
Included in our standard abortion care fee, at no extra charge:
- Pre-Surgery pain reduction
- Light IV Sedation medication for relaxation during surgery
- Local anesthesia for the cervix
Moderate (medium) IV Sedation
For extra comfort
Patients concerned about pain prefer this option of stronger medication for a small additional charge. Stronger, faster acting IV sedation medications are used to ease pain and anxiety. These are given in addition to the standard local anesthesia plan.
Deep IV Sedation
New at Northland
This is our deepest and strongest sedation, available for a nominal charge, which can make your abortion PAIN-FREE. You may actually feel you are asleep or not conscious for the period of time during your abortion surgery. Keeping our commitment to strict national standards, we have invested in top of the line equipment. And, because your comfort and safety are our top concerns, you will have a female Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) in the surgery room with you, a specially trained RN in our Post Anesthesia Care Recovery Unit and, of course, Northland's special Comfort Care.
Please remember, this is NOT general anesthesia, which involves more risk, is more serious and reserved for surgery that is invasive, longer and more in-depth. For the short duration of your surgery, general anesthesia is not the preferred method of sedation. Deep IV Sedation may feel like general anesthesia, but it is different and designed to be shorter and safer for you and your recovery.

GENERAL ANESTHESIA WARNING
Some abortion providers may tell you
they are using General Anesthesia,
when, in fact, they are using
lesser sedation medications
Be careful.
If the provider says they are using 'General":
- Ask if a Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) will be present for your safety.
- Ask about equipment and training.
- Ask if they meet national guidelines for office-based anesthesia.
